Lake Tekapo, New Zealand
Lake Tekapo is centrally located to several points of interests in the Mackenzie region, making it a great base to explore the area. Picturesque by day and dazzling by night, Lake Tekapo is part of UNESCO Dark Sky Reserve. Step out from anywhere you are, into the open space at night to admire the stars that blanket the sky.
Food and accommodation are much more expensive in Lake Tekapo compared to the other towns we visited. Most of the accommodation are situated along the gorgeous lake, offering stunning views of turquoise coloured water against the backdrop of the Southern Alps. We stayed at Tekapo 1929, a charming apartment built in 1928. Tekapo 1929 is located at the start of the lake approximately 15 min walk from the town center. I like that it is away from the main tourist crowd and it was nice to have a quiet stroll back to the apartment in the evenings.
Church of the Good Shephard is just 5 minutes walk from Tekapo 1929, on the way to the town center. The church was closed by the time we got there so only managed to take photos of its exterior.
We went up to Mount John Observatory the next morning to take in the gorgeous views from atop. You could either take a 15min drive to the mountain top or go on foot for about an hour. Needless to say, we chose the former.
