Fairlie, New Zealand

Fairlie is a quaint rural town that is approximately 2hr 30min drive from Christchurch. It is dubbed as the "Gateway to the Mackenzie Country" and a popular stop when on a road trip traveling south from Christchurch.

We grabbed some freshly baked pies at Fairlie Bakehouse to fill our hungry stomachs after a long flight from Singapore.

Take just a 2min drive from Fairlie Bakehouse and you will find yourself at Gem Alpaca Stud. Time your visit to join a tour of the farm that departs every 2 hours to get upclose with the alpacas, llamas and sheep. We walked through the vast fields to feed and interact with the friendly animals. It was not only a fun-filled afternoon but an educational one too. Did you know that there are as many as 22 different coloured alpacas? How to differentiate an alpaca from a llama?

If you are planning on visiting Gem Alpaca Stud, do remember to bring along a pair of socks as you will be required to change into gum boots. You do not want to be stepping on animal poop with your fancy shoes :)
